India AI Visibility Index — which Indian brands AI search actually recommends

By Vishal · Published 13 October 2026

The India AI Visibility Index measures, every quarter, whether AI answer engines recommend Indian brands: 200 brands, ten sectors, twenty buyer prompts each, run in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It reports citation share by sector and engine, which sources the engines rely on, and what the most-cited brands do differently. The first edition publishes in January 2027; the method is below.

Why this study exists

Everyone selling GEO in India cites global statistics. Nobody has published what the engines actually say when an Indian buyer asks an Indian question — "best term insurance in India", "good CA firm in Pune", "which D2C skincare brand is worth it". Without a baseline, every claim about AI visibility is unfalsifiable, including ours. The Index is the baseline: the same panel, the same scoring, every quarter, with the data released.

Method

  1. Brands. 200 brands, 20 per sector, chosen to span market leaders, challengers and regional players. Selection is by sector share and size, published with the report; nobody can pay in.
  2. Prompts. 20 buyer prompts per sector, written the way buyers write them (best/compare/is-it-worth-it/how-to-choose/near-me), never containing a brand name. The full prompt set is published.
  3. Engines. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews (where triggered), ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Gemini. Fresh, logged-out sessions, India locale, English. Each prompt run twice per engine, a week apart, to reduce variance.
  4. Scoring. For every answer: brands mentioned, brands cited with a link, the page cited, and every third-party source cited. Citation share = prompts in which a brand is cited ÷ prompts in its sector. Share of voice = mentions ÷ all brand mentions in the sector.
  5. Sources. Every cited domain is classified — brand site, review platform, directory, publisher, Reddit/community, government — so the report can say where recommendations come from in each sector.
  6. Review. All runs are performed and checked by a person; nothing is scraped from third-party "AI rank trackers".

What the report will contain

  • Citation share and share of voice for all 200 brands, by engine.
  • Sector league tables and the gap between the organic top ten and what the engines cite.
  • The source map: which third-party sites the engines trust in each sector (and how much of it is Reddit).
  • What the top-cited brands have in common on-page — structure, authorship, evidence — scored with the same checks as our free checker.
  • The full prompt set, the brand list, and the raw data as CSV.
